Dan Starkey studied at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, before training at the Bristol Old Vic, graduating in 2006. He played the enraged loner Simon in Muswell Hill by Torben Betts at Richmond’s Orange Tree Theatre in 2012, and was honoured for his role with a nomination as Best Male Performance at the 2012 Off West End Theatre Awards, known as the Offies.
He has played various Sontaran roles in televised Doctor Who, as well as for audio dramas and the Doctor Who video game The Gunpowder Plot. He has also played other non-Sontaran characters for audio and The Sarah Jane Adventures.
Dan is best known for playing a Sontaran soldier named Strax, an occasional associate of the Eleventh Doctor, played by Matt Smith. Besides appearing in seven episodes (“The Sontaran Stratagem”, “The Poison Sky”, “The End of Time”, “A Good Man Goes to War”, “The Snowmen”, “The Crimson Horror”, and “The Name of the Doctor”), Starkey also appears as Strax in two ‘minisodes’ (“The Great Detective” and “Vestra Investigations”), as well as Doctor Who Prom, and a number of online promotional videos uploaded by the BBC under the title Strax Field Report. He has also made public appearances in costume and in character as Strax at venues such as the Doctor Who Experience.
